Informaion for the Disabled Driver In the City of Edmonton

For a Disabled Parking Placard, you will require an Application form filled out by your doctor which you take into any Registry Office to be issued a Placard; the cost for a placard varies from Registry to Registry.   

The Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital offers driver training for individuals who require the use of hand controls for driving. they have a modified van and sedan.  In order to qualify you will need a referral letter from a doctor, you will also be required to have an assessment by the Glenrose Driver Training Staff, the costs are:

$250.00 for an evaluation

$50.00 per hour for lessons

 Disabled Parking at on-street parking meters: 

Vehicles displaying the PROVINCIALLY ISSUED disabled placard are permitted to park at City of Edmonton parking meters.   Disabled placard holders are permitted to park at on-street parking meters free of charge for the specified duration of the meter.   All vehicles MUST display the disabled placard.

Example: 15 minutes free parking at 15 Minute meters 30 minutes free parking at 30 Minute meters 2 hours free parking at 2 hour meters 5 hours free parking at 5 hour meters

Disabled placards will NOT permit free parking at the following locations:

City Hall parkade, on any Private Property including any Hospital, Post-Secondary Educational Institute/Campus, etc.

Disabled Parking Zones

You can make a request to the Transportation Department to have a Disabled Parking Zone designated in front of your residence.

Designated Use The zone will typically be 7. 5 m (25′), long enough for one vehicle. If your neighbour next door requests another such zone, one longer one may be set aside.

Once designated, anyone displaying a valid Province of Alberta disabled parking placard can use a Disabled Parking Zone. It is not for the exclusive use of any individual.

Application Requirements Before we can install a Disabled Parking Zone:

  • You must have a valid disabled parking placard from the Province of Alberta, or be registered with the Disabled Adults Transportation System (DATS).
  • Your residence must not have a driveway leading to the street.
  • If you do not own your residence, you must have written permission from the owner.

Fees Disabled Parking Zones for private residences will be installed at no charge.

When a private business, school, apartment complex or public service institution requests such a zone, the request must be made in writing, from the building owner or property manager, before it can be met. There will be a charge for this service.
